Baltic region and Languages.

The Baltic region today is dominated by 3 main languages: Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian. However in the past the area was a proverbial rainforest of diversity. So what I want to see is a Baltic taken to the modern day with much more languages in active use. These can include:

Estonian, Ingrian, Livonian, Veps, Votic, Curonian, Galindian, Latgalian, Lithuanian, Prussian, Samogitian, Selonian, Semigallian, Skalvian, and Sudovian.

Historically these languages faced threats from German, Swedish/ Finish and Russian.

There were indeed a lot of languages there.
The only problem is really...They were just in regions too small to survive beyond use by tribes. For more baltic languages to survive IMO you'd need the balts invading out of the balkans and spreading elsewhere.

I think no Teutonic Order or Northern Crusades, which would leave the pagan Balts free from Teutonic rule. They would probably be conquered by Poland, Lithuania, or someone else, but at a later date and higher population.

I think Curonian is your best bet, they were quite powerful at some point, even being referred to as the Vikings of the Baltic.

Votes, Ingrians, and Veps all still exist (although the first two are dying out).

I never said they didn't exist ;). Just that they were very small and dominated by others. Did you know there are only 10 native Livonian speakers left :(. I always thought that, left to there own devices, the Livs could really mae a go of it.

probably they would, without centuries of German and or Russian domination their language would probably be much more widespread in their respective areas.
