Balkanized South Africa

How can we get South Africa to be split into multiple countries, mostly with a PoD after the boertrek?
I've thought of two scenarios...
1) The british, for some reason, become afraid of afrikaner dominance in SA, and decide not to create the South African Union, instead four (more, considering the small native african kingdoms?) separate countries: Cape, Natal, Orange, and Transvaal. My question, however, is which PoD could result in such a scenario.

2) Mandela is sentenced to death, and the ANC takes a more militant stance, or the USSR lives a bit longer, diminishing the legitimacy issues of the apartheid regime. Africa's northeastern provinces break off from the SAU in the late 80's or 90's, forming the Republic of Azania. Perhaps Ciskei also becomes independent.

What do you guys think?

Northeastern areas? You mean the Bantustans and Black Homelands in general? Keeping a wide berth from the three main Afrikaner cities?

Well, by "northeastern areas", i meant the territory of the former Orange and Transvaal states, which had a sizeable black population. I envisage that a "Republic of Azania" would mostly comprise that territory.

It would be an interesting scenario having the other regions fall into periods of instability and conflict next to a stable Cape state (possibly including Namibia), though could probably see the Cape state eventually being drawn into the chaos next door should things really go downhill.

Not happening. You are not going to be having an area with a modern army allow it's capitals and what they see as their homelands to be lost to revolt.

Your best bet is probably having the Union of South Africa fail to form. The Boer Republics form a "lesser" Union (Orange, Transvaal, Natal) while Cape Colony becomes a separate nation (Capeland?) Bechuanaland stays separate (maybe even with British Bechuanaland added under a Native Ruler?). South West Africa never joins or is occupied, but moves in the same orbit. Rhodesia stays out but is in the Anglo-sphere as well.

As time goes on, the various "leading" nations (Union, Cape or Rhodesia) vie for control and unification of the area, but all fail. Eventually, separation becomes the norm and competition is usual.

Would it be possible for the ATL unified Boer Republics to take much of Southern Rhodesia or would that require an earlier pre-1900 POD?
