Balkanized Egypt and Sudan

Balkanized Egypt and Sudan

This map is just an example, doesn't have to be followed. ;)

Bunch of maps floating around of what a Balkanized Egypt and Sudan could have looked like. What would be the best time in history for this to occur? How would you envision it breaking apart and the borders.

Look at the divisions of Ancient Egypt:
In the Delta, the borders mostly followed smaller streams and were centered on cities sitting on the bigger rivers.
In Upper Egypt, the smaller sub-Egypts will be sit like pearl on a string, from the south to the north. Having the border in the middle of the Nile is possible, but IMO unlikely.
Then there might be statelets centered on places on the Red Sea, or on places in the Western Desert, like the Fayyum, the Siwa Oasis or Darfur.

Real independence of these areas would hardly happen before the existence of modern infrastructure. The Nile is pretty much the only connection with the outside world.

I'm afraid that the only word that I can read in this map is Misr.. Can you translate it?

The map essentially bases each state around a major city in Egypt.

1. Suez
2. Asyut
3. Aswan
4. Alexandria
5. Cairo

Giving Nubians a state could be possible if you give them some of Egypt and Sudan's Territory. Giving the Beja their own state would further balkanize Sudan as well as keeping Dafur independent

I find it funny that the place that's most likely to balkanize(South Sudan) actually seems to have gained territory.

I can't see there being extremely balkanised Egypt and Sudan. These are mostly desert and population is pretty much centered around Nile and these are quiet homogenous countries. But perhaps Delta Nile remain Christianity majority, and area gains somehow independence. And this not be very plausible. Sudan is bit easier balkanised and in fact on future it might be possible that Darfur too secede from Sudan.

I don't know where that map comes from, but the legends seem to imply that it describes an Israeli plan (so I guess it might be some sort of anti-Israeli propaganda, based, however, on some notions that were historically entertained in Israeli governments). The northeast of Egypt is described as under Israeli rule, which I don't think anyone in Israel ever seriously considered of course. The strange looking thing with Asyut as a capital is labeled as a "Christian" (Coptic) state, that indeed was an idle dream of some in Israel at times. Both it and the Nubian state would be minority ruled, which doesn't bode well for the stability of the arrangement.
In general, I can easily see Sudan balkanized in various scenarios. Egypt is a lot harder.
