It's possible, but unlikely. I don't know enough to go into specifics, but there was a huge amount of tension between the slave-owning plantation elite and the city-dwelling educated elite in the late 19th century. Perhaps a civil war (prompted by the death of Dom Pedro I?) could end with two separate republics?
Anywhere there was a rebellion, I'm sure there would have been enough support for an independent state, provided the imperial or federal government could be weakened considerably.
