Baghdad falls during the Iran - Iraq War?

It may have been unlikely but assuming the Iranians broke through Iraqi lines and fought their way into Baghdad and managed to capture Saddam Hussein how might the world today be different?

It may have been unlikely

That's a terrible bit of understatement......

It would have required an act of ASB for the Iranians to coordinate such a complex and ambitious offensive, since both Iran and Iraq suffered from poor command and control at this time.

It was quite possible, if only imam Khameini use his Charisma to rouse the Iraqi Shiite populances. But then even the Imams aren't stupid, once the Iraqi border is broken and they march into Baghdad, all gloves will be off and BOTH Soviet Union AND USA will do a joint strike to at least "nominally" liberate Iraq. Keep in mind that (1) Saddam is used to be Soviet Ally. (2) Islamic Revolution topple American friendly regime of Shah while also being hostile to the Soviets. (3) Iran at this time is an international Pariah.

That means Soviet will do their best to occupy Iraq and USA march to invade Iran... And this could mean a big butterfly of today's Islamic revivalists. Furthermore, that could make US withdrawn their help from Mudjahiddins in Afghanistans.

Could end up in a better world now... Ah if only...

I wonder if a 'Russia 1917' scenario is possible... had the war take a nasty turn for Saddam, could inner troubles start, perhaps with the proposed iranian influences AND kurds rising up, or at least factionalism in generals and all.. and Baghdad falls to troubles and out of Sadam's hand, if not by iranian hands.

Maybe if by a random accident, a very lucky bombing.. or fragging.. Saddam and his inner circle are killed...

The Iranians mass murdering Iraqi Shia POWs and defectors sort of killed that opportunity for them.
