They would likely have a far stronger German identity. But political it would also make Baden far stronger in domestic German politics.

Besides the state would not be a legal mess, depend how Baden threat them, if good woul allow they integrated as germans and that might make the french even madder.

As I understand it Baden was fairly Prussophilic so could they perhaps be more willing to accept Prussian soldiers that would be guarding the new Franch German border than say Bavaria?

Baden without Alsace had a population the size of Denmark, Alsace it would be closer in size to Sweden. Baden doesn't need Prussian soldiers to guard the border in peace time.

Even better, that removes that particular source of friction entirely, I also understand that Bavaria and Baden had something of a rivalry could that begin to manifest within the empire with a larger Baden?

I believe the dialects are similar, which would also work against the pro French identity.

I don't think it will have a great effect, Prussia still have something like 70 % of the empire's population, but we may see Baden push for greater economic cooperation with the Swiss, and have a greater push there. But in the end it's still Berlin which dominate the empire.

I never had any doubt In that, was just curious as to how rivalries between the smaller states might play out.
