In the midst of the Reagan build-up, the USAF goes through with an engine replacement on the B-52. The TF33-P-3 engines are replace by 4 TF-39-GE-1C engines also used on the C-5B. In the electronics department an AN/APG-65 radar is added also used by production F/A-18s. Range is increased and carrying the new radar allowed the use of the new AIM-120 AMRAAM missile.
