Right, but that would still have been a European war, not a World war.

You keep making that distinction as though God Almighty demands of us that we use terms in a consistent and rational manner!:p

I say, if another war between Germany on one side and Britain and France on the other had to be fought to the sort of sweeping conclusion that would be required to oust Hitler from power, or check the militarists and/or Nazis raised to power by the promise of war in Germany, with armament being the sole basis for what passed for German economic recovery in the late Thirties, well, Europeans are going to call it another Great War. Why and when was the first Great War ever referred to as a "World" War? In what sense was it, compared with the truly global spectacle of the second war OTL?

The OP clearly was not thinking much of the Japanese component of the OTL WW, which arguably alone makes that war of OTL a true "World War." Vice versa, the war in China, as Cal Bear noted, had already been going on for some time--but then he seemed to assume that the European one would automatically be linked to it and more to the point, the mere fact that a war that we retroactively wrapped into one big global package historically was begun automatically means "WWII" is already on, even if total peace reigned in Europe.

I suppose it might be conceivable that, if Hitler falls down the stairs and dies sometime in '37, that the "inevitable" conflict with between Germany and the western Entente turns into a comic-opera skirmish with both sides backing down quickly, falling so low on the scale of wars that no one ever calls it a Great war, therefore not a "World" war.

But if it turns into a knock-down fight with the Entente determined to see the Nazis ousted and Germany demilitarized, which means an all-out slugfest against everything the Germans can muster before they very grudgingly surrender amid the ruins of their occupied nation, clearly it is no less, if also no more, a World War than the 1914-18 war was.

The OP clearly is talking about averting any level of warfare in Europe, or at any rate keeping it at a very low level. We shouldn't quibble about how global it truly would be or whether Japan's war on China is relevant or not.

Anything that removes Hitler from power prevents WWII. He was the only one who was fanatic enough to take that risk and powerful enough to make the nation follow him into such a suicide mission.

As for the allies: WITH Hitler in power, war is going to happen whatever may, but they could easily have won a lot faster - by essentially not screwing up.

Simple. Britain and France do not declare war when Germany invades Poland. They leave it be. Eventually, Hitler will be building up his forces for a full scale invasion of the Soviet Union in 1940. The war begins and Germany is eventually crushed by the Russians. Eastern Europe effectively becomes community earlier on as does all of Germany itself. A global war is not necessary, just a regional one between two rival powers in Europe.
