Automotive WI - East German carmakers without Tatra or Skoda

In the OTL there was a lot of cooperation between the East German and Czechoslovakian carmakers despite many of the projects never reaching production, on top of that the Horch / Sachsenring P240 lost out to the Tatra 603 in trials to determine which country would continue production to supply the other with luxurious vehicles.

What if though Czechoslovakia or the Czech Republic avoided becoming part of the Eastern Bloc after WW2 and how would the absence of Skoda and Tatra impact the development of the East German car industry?

Other East German carmakers include Wartburg and Trabant with there being indications of cooperation between the two companies (along with Skoda), particularly with the Trabant replacement prototypes that were to be derived from Wartburg and Skoda mechanicals.

What would have been interesting is a scenario where EMW was somehow revived from the mid/late-60s and essentially producing copies of BMW's 02, New Class and New Six, even down to using a BMW M10-inspired/copied engine family as appeared in the Moskvitch 412 though not sure what would have been the best way of realizing such an ATL scenario.

Maybe East Germany would follow other socialist countries' example (Poland, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union) and make a deal with Fiat?

A deal with Fiat would be too easy a solution, besides even West Germany had NSU-Fiat / Neckar in OTL.

In the case of ATL Trabant and Wartburg, was thinking they still manage to establish some form of cooperation with Skoda instead (if not unscrupulously copy them). Which would allow Skoda to pension off their OTL 988-1289cc 4-cylinder 4-stroke OHV engines (with ATL Skoda moving on to OHC engines they were developing in OTL), so both Trabant and Wartburg would be able to replace their old DKW-derived 2-stroke engines.

ATL Trabant could build production versions of the Trabant P603 prototype, followed by either or both the Trabant P610 and Trabant P601 WEII prototypes though it is also possible Trabant ends up being absorbed into Wartburg continuing on as a model name for an entry-level Wartburg. Meanwhile ATL Wartburg could build production versions of both the Wartburg 355 and Wartburg 360 prototypes.

Horch (or Sachsenring), let alone EMW is another matter however. Though the absence of Tatra should help Horch grow into the premier Eastern Bloc luxury carmaker, the simplest solution for both Horch and EMW on the engine front would be to utilize the BMW M10-derived/copied Moskvitch 412 engine to spawn inline-6, V8 and maybe even V12 engines if not directly copy the BMW M10 engine themselves (with Wartburg possibly utilizing 1.5-1.6 4-cylinder units).

EMW would utilize the 4-cylinder and inline-6 engines for their BMW 02 and New Class inspired cars, while Horch would utilize either or both the V8 and V12 engines for their BMW New Six / E23 inspired range-topper albeit with styling (possibly featuring elements of the Wartburg prototypes) that is plausibly deniable enough for both EMW and Horch to not be accused of deliberately copying BMW.

Slightly OT though in OTL, Poland (along with Czechoslovakia) were said to have been receptive to the Marshal Plan until pressure from Stalin forced them to refuse, what if instead ATL Poland accepts the Marshal Plan with the Soviets punishing them by redistributing the Marshal Plan aid intended for Poland to other Eastern Bloc countries such as East Germany (helping the latter push through with approving various automotive projects as well as improving various industries)?

At the same time, it is likely the ATL Trabant, Wartburg and Horch marques end up being acquired by Volkswagen after the cold war and German reunification with Wartburg or Trabant being rehabilitated to become the ATL Volkswagen Group's Skoda analogue. The EMW marque meanwhile would probably disappear given its ATL infamous reputation as Eastern Bloc BMWs.

Interestingly it seems Volkswagen in OTL did indeed look at developing new Trabant and Horch models, the former known as the Trabant X03 or P1995 being apparently based on the upcoming 3rd generation Volkswagen Polo (though could just as well be badged as a Wartburg), while consideration was given at one point to re-launching Horch as Audi's equivalent of Maybach.

Speaking of Volkswagen prior to the later OTL Polo/EA111-engined Trabant 1.1 and Wartburg 1.3 models, it seems they were also involved somehow in the development of a 34 hp 1103cc Trabant 3-cylinder 4-stroke diesel and 60 hp 1191cc Wartburg 3-cylinder 4-stroke petrol prototype engines (to replace the old 2-stroke units) as they were said to be based on the 1471cc diesel and 1588cc petrol Volkswagen EA827 engines respectively.

A few of the OTL Trabant and Wartburg prototypes.

1) Wartburg (or Trabant) P100 (1961) - first not relevant in ATL due complexity, 2) Trabant P603 (1967), 3) Trabant P610 (1971-1979) and 4) Trabant P601 WEII (1982)

Wartburg 355 Coupe (1968) - While OTL prototype was said to be derived from existing Wartburg 353 yet powered by a 1.4 Renault/Dacia-sourced engine, envision the alternate version being instead based on some version of the OTL Wartburg-Skoda P760 "Hängebauchschwein" (aka "Pot-Bellied Pig") prototype that eventually formed the basis for the OTL Skoda Favorit.

Wartburg 610 M1 (1978) - also includes earlier Wartburg 360, the OTL version was essentially best described as a front-engined FWD Skoda Estelle
