Automotive WI – Porsche 912 was as successful as original Porsche 911

The 911 being the more performance orientated model would remain a 2+2 in Coupe form and thus also spawn 2-seater Targa / Cabriolet variants.

The ATL 912 being a more practical 4-seater Coupe would still be equipped with relatively potent 911-based Flat-4s yet otherwise be less performance originated compared to the 911, however to avoid confusion / overlap and largely due to the 4-seater layout the ATL 912 would NOT feature any open-top 2-seater variants (as was the case with the OTL 912). The closest one would get to an open-top 2-seater 912 would be the (more potent) Flat-4 versions of the open-top 911s available in certain markets.

Thus leaving the ATL 914 to partly fill the void left from the lack of open-top 2-seater versions of the ATL 912 in spite of being conceived in this scenario to slot below the latter, though there would likely be scope for the ATL 914 to receive the same 1900-2000cc+ displacement 911-derived Flat-4s as on the ATL 912 (possibly still even the 911's Flat-6s as in OTL). The ATL 914 by virtue of its lightness and conception as an entry-level open-top 2-seater Porsche, would not need more than displacements of 1500-1700cc with turbocharging allowing the ATL 914 to offer decent performance without significantly increasing the price as was the case with the OTL Flat-6 powered 914/6.

Largely agree the ATL 914 in this scenario depends on the success of the 4-door 911-derived model, yet even if the latter were a success and used up production capacity let us not forget that Volkswagen was involved with the development of the OTL 914 and did build Porsche-powered (Flat-4/6) Type 3/4 prototypes with a view of putting them into production. In which case the ATL 914 would be powered by Porsche 911-derived Flat-4s yet sold as effectively built and sold as a 2-door 2-seater Volkswagen or Volkswagen-Porsche.
