Austroslovenia

Slovene Nationalism, while not to be ignored, seems to have been less intense than Croatian or Serbian. Slovenia also had a long long history as being part of the Holy Roman Empire, German Confederation, and a direct part of the Archduchy of Austria.

After WWI, could Slovenia have remained part of Austria? If so, after WWII could Austria have reclaimed Trentino, Istria, and Trieste? And perhaps even slices of Germany (pieces of Bavaria)?

EDIT: I found the above map online while googling images of the Archduchy of Austria. My including it in this post is just because the bit that says Empire of Austria seemed like an accuratish idea of what I thought Austroslovenia might look like if it got Istria, Trentino, and Trieste (although looking more closely it seems they retain Pressburg but lack Bergenland).

Below is a map of the Austrian Archduchy from before the Napoleonic Wars for comparison.

It would give Austria coastline, but they probably wouldn't allow it to have any more than it currently does. Italy wanted some, Croatia (Yugoslavia) might even want some.

I think after WWI it would be a landlocked polity. If they have coastal access, it'd be through some kind of Fiume Free State (not that one) akin to Danzig or Memel.

It'd only be after TTL's version of WWII (assuming broadly similar alliance structure) that Austria is able to get a direct coastline via the direct incorporation of the Fiume Free State and the annexation of Istria and Trieste from Italy (along with regaining South Tyrol of course).

As a side matter, I wonder what might become of Yugoslavia here. Without Slovenia, Serbia is the Kingdom of Serbs and Croats rather than the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Meanwhile the state of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs, if it lacks, Slovenia, is functionally just Greater Croatia (Croatia, Slavonia, Dalmatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina). There might be resistance to being annexed by Serbia.

I can see Italy propping up a Greater Croatia if they're allowed their little slice of Dalmatia.

Can you tell me about the map itself? You make that? Whats the backstory?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. When googling Archduchy of Austria so I could insert a hyperlink in my OP, that map came up in google images. I thought the bit “Empire of Austria” looked similar to what I was going for so I included the map. There are a lot of interesting DeviantArt images that pop up if you look up Archduchy of Austria.

OTL there had been right winged hostile politics against Slovene minority and their language in Post WW2 Austria. Exspecially Joerg Haider of the right Wing populistic FPÖ.
