Austro-Hungarian Question.

why didn't Franz Ferdinand's Children become next in line to the Throne? he had two sons, Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg and Prince Ernst von Hohenberg born in in 1902 and 1904, but when great uncle Franz Joseph I dies it's Franz Ferdinand''s little borther's son Karl took over and became Charles I/IV, why is that?

His wife, Sophie, was not considered coequal. On marriage, Franz Ferdinand had to relinquish all pretensions of his future children on the throne.
If he had lived, he surely would have changed that, but because Franz Joseph survived him, the son of his younger brother became emperor.
