Austro-German Nationalism?

During the Yalta Conference Churchill put the idea of a 'Danubian Confederation' forward in which southern Germany, Austria and Hungary would be united into a single unit. Stalin and Roosevelt didn't care for this as they believed the ensuing nation would be easy prey for Germany later on whilst Stalin wanted to retain Hungary in his sphere of influence.

Now, let's say that Churchill relents on Hungary and agrees to it being in the Soviet sphere, but Austria and southern Germany are united into a single unit. If you can think of a good POD then great, if not then just use the power of the ASB or w/e.

So, how would this new 'über-Austria/Bavaria', or 'Danubian Confederation', work out? Could we see a kind of Catholic German nationalism arising? Would it ever re-unite with 'North Germany'?

Well, an Austro-German nationalism may require the following:

1) Implementation of the Morgenthau Plan (divides North and South Germany): Of course, this plan wouldn't be popular at all, if the true contents of the Plan was revealed to the public, giving Goebbels another ammo on his propaganda campaign.

2) Having either the Americans or British (which army was occupying Bavaria?) withdraw from Bavaria and allows Bavaria to unite with Austria.

3) Have a western German state called Westphalia. Now that the German states are split into the Rhine-based Westphalia, the Austro-Bavarian Federation and the German Democratic Republic (or let's call it the Prussian Democratic Republic, assuming that Prussia would still be allowed to exist at Poland's expense)

That's all I could give for possible suggestions to an Austro-German nationalist state. Given of course, they would be neutral like Switzerland.

My personal thought was the third one, splitting Rhineland-Hanover off as an independent state under de-facto French control, an eastern Germany and a Bavaria united with Austria.

So, if we saw this happen, would we see the Austro-German state re-unite with the two 'northern' states to form Germany as a whole? Being united with Bavaria would obviously keep a sort of German nationalism alive in Austria, but would this turn into a Catholic German nationalism, and if so would that be enough to stop any north-south re-unification?

Only the Rhineland could be united with Austro-Bavaria, while Hannover would be swallowed by the DDR. German Democratic People's Republic, anyone?

The religious makeup does say otherwise, but if Hannover could find a way to either remain an independent nation or join the Austro-Bavarian bloc, then they'll be better off. Most of the former North German Confederation was dominated by Prussia, which included Hannover.
