Austriawank

In defiance of conventional wisdom on this board, item: The Habsburg Empire Must Collapse, and: Its Only Ameriwank When We Rule More Than Half Of Europe In Addition To All Of The Americas, Otherwise It Is Our Preordained Fate,...
Where was I? Oh, yes. We, the United People's Front of Habsburgophilia (or was it the Popular Front?) issue the following challenge:

Your Mission, if y'all choose to accept it, is to make the following map a contemporary one with a POD between 1618 and 1815.

Btw, the small Text in 'Jefferson' means: Leased for 100 years to the Danube Monarchy.

1000 extra points if the US still has slavery, is an international pariah and is seen as less civilized than Serbia. Wage slavery doesn't count- alternate history, remember?

5000 extra points if Slobodan Milosevic, Huey Long and Benito Mussolini were all past US presidents- probably slightly anglicised in the case of Slobo and Bennie.

You're completely unversed in the concept of the "Butterfly Affect", aren't you?

Ah, the Prussian Erbfeind rears his Pickelhaube'd head! I am indeed familiar with this particular concept. I am just asking to have people named Huey Long, or Benjamin Musoliney, etc. born and made POTUS. That these won't be the same personalities as in OTL is quite obvious.

Interesting...

The Maine-Canada border is as in OTL...

Surely, if Maine had not been separate from Canada when they worked it out, they wouldn't end up with this...

So Maine (and probably the rest of New England) was separate from Canada at some point...

EDIT: How is this Austriawank? And why did my post get messed up with < p > tags and no line breaks? And now, instead of greater-than/less-than signs, it has & lt; and & gt;! What's going on????????

EDIT: Okay. I fixed it on a different computer.

I would think that if Austria has any chance of becoming a proper imperial or colonial power post 1700, would be to somehow try to stay aloof from the Revolutionary wars with France. Perhaps they could make a pact with the Russians to divide the ailing Ottoman Empire between them.

How do you plan on giving Austria that large of a chunk of America?

I think the "Holy Roman Empire" would have to be thoroughly centralized during the Medieval Era, as well as have full control of the Hanseatic League states and maybe even Flanders as well, before they could seriously compete in the colonization of the Americas. No way are they going to achieve this after the 1600 or 1700's.

Do you count the habsburgs in general as austrians. If you are looking for the spread of austrian culture and their language in the new world then that is more difficult. perhaps if the rule over flanders was much more enlightened and there was much more movement within the Austrian empire then perhaps we would have Flemish merchants under the flag Austria creating an east india company.

Officially, they weren't called the Austrians until 1806. And even then, if one of the German Emperors of the Medieval Era had managed to consolidate and centralize their rule of the various Elector-States and maintained that kind of control down till 1500, they may have been in the running to colonize the Americas, Asia and Africa.

Austria/Austro-Hungary's best chance, I think, of 1800's Imperialism is avoiding the Revolutionary Wars with France, establishing a strong presence in the Balkans, perhaps as far as Greece itself. Even then, they might consider giving such countries a degree of self-government in a bid to prevent nationalistic uprisings. Also, having the likes of Serbia, Bosnia or even Greece, if possible, would give them a chance to develop a navy. I don't see them taking any part in the "Scramble for Africa", but if the Austrians make a deal with the Russians, perhaps they could launch themselves against the weakened Ottomans, and take hold of Crete and Cyprus. Perhaps, after fortifying their positions there, the Austrians may even consider sending expeditions to Syria or Jerusalem, but I'm not certain of their chances for success in those countries. Also, they might find themselves dealing with the French and British, who had strategic interests in the eastern Mediterranean.

So, those countries (in English) are

British North America

the Danube Monarchy

United States

Spanish Florida

French Louisiana

Mexico

?

Suggestion: When Charles V of Spain divides his vast empire, the Austrian Habsburgs get that part of North America. Since there isn't much gold around, the Spaniards might deem it worthless anyway.

Nice names for the Austrian provinces, BTW.

You can always go with one of my favorite PoD's Columbus Sails for Maximilian I. Maximilian had the funding and Burgundy so its a fairly effective idea.

That would be a Burgundy-Wank, though :p
His son Charles V. did consider himself foremost a Burgundian, and if he hadnt been made Spanish King surely wouldve ruled from there...

This is true, but at some point the Austrians would probably inheirate Burgundy or the two would become powerful enough within the HRE to centralize it, so you could kind of get to the desired end. Besides I just realized the PoD would be about 150 years too early for this, as specified.

Oh, didnt see the timeframe. Hm, I guess the Austrians could always have even more extraordinary successes against the Ottomans, and hence gain more land, like Romania or Serbia... and the way Habsburg secondary lines inherited nearly all dying out Italian Houses IOTL wasnt funny anymore, surely something can be done with that, too...
