Austria regains Silesia

As a condition for his daughter, Marie Louise, marrying Napoleon, Francis demands the return of Silesia from Prussia. Napoleon agrees, knowing it would ruin Austrian-Prussian relations. When Napoleon was defeated Francis does not want to give Silesia up. With Prussia demands for Saxony and Russian demands for Poland, Francis proposes that the border between their countries is the 1795 border, Ottoman land north of the Danube to Russia and Saxony to Prussia.

Impossible without a war

A way to have it is Austria not joining the coalition after the truce of Pleisswitz. Napoleon has a better chance to won a crushing victory against just Russian and Prussia. And after he does, he pays the price by snatching Silesia away from defeated Prussia.

Result:Czechs instead of Poles now hold the area... although curious how will an interwar Czechoslovakia cope with a doubled amount of Germans

What would it take for Austria to regain Silesia? If Austria regains Silesia and maybe Bavaria after the downfall of Napoleon besides Saxony what would Prussia gain to compensate? What would the border between Austria, Prussia and Russia be? 1795 possibly?

I can’t see any way for Austria to gain both Silesia and Bavaria by these PODs. Because trying to do it then would alienate Prussia, Russia, Britain and France.

The Bavarian exchange for the Austrian Netheland is easy to pull off especially if you dont have a strong Prussia to oppose it.

No it is not easy to pull off because the Habsburgs and the Wittelsbach are not the only one to have a say in the matter.

Since the treaties of Westphalia all other European power had a say in the HRE’s evolution and they always wanted to make sure that the HRE remain a weak and divided structure because none of them wanted a strong HRE.

So, if Prussia is too weak to have a say, then Russia, France and Sweden will not agree to a swap that unilaterally makes Austria much stronger inside the HRE and in Central Europe.

Except that France was allied to Austria between the seven year war and the revolution so its unlikely to oppose it. Prussia is out of the picture and Sweden proved to be a non entity in the seven years war. That only leaves Russia who at the time is more concerned with conquering as much of ottoman territory as it can while controlling Poland and I dont think would go to war with Austria over a HRE issue which is monetary wise a loss to Austria as the Austrian Netherlands paid much more than Bavaria could be expected. The only ones unhappy are the british and the dutch but good luck for them in forcing Austria and France to do anyithing in a continental matter without a major ally.

The french Austrian alliance was a short lived one.

Both allies had been very disappointed by their results in the 7 years war.

And after Maria Theresa’s death in 1780, it was but a piece of paper to be torn apart at the first opportunity. Austria even considered allying with Britain in the American Revolution War.

And even under Maria Theresa, the alliance did not mean one ally would gladly accept a massive increase in the other’s power without compensation for himself.

The French would not work for the emperor of Austria the way they had worked for the king of Prussia during the war of Austrian succession.

So basically, the French agreeing to Austria gaining Silesia and Bavaria would mean they would obtain at least the austrian Netherlands and possibly some other territories in Rhineland.

This would imply the Wittelsbach losing Bavaria when the Bavarian branch becomes extinct and remaining in Palatinate.

However OTL the Bavarian exchange plan an the ensuing war with Prussia happened in Maria Theresias lifetime. And the Austro-french alliance - though I admit that it wasnt the most lively one and both sides had been disappointed - remained in effect till the french revolution. And as I alread said exchanging Bavaria to the Austrian Netherlands wouldnt be a huge increase in Austrias power - on the contrary. The Austrian netherlands were much richer than Bavaria. One problem OTL with the exchange plans was that because of this disparity in worth Austria was reluctant to give the whole territory in exchange for Bavaria. Bavaria could only compensate for this by being next to the other Austrian dominions (and later, after nationalism is born by being german) instead of being a hard to defend exclave.

And regarding what the french were ready and not ready to give consult the austro-french alliance treaties during the seven years war. At first France was to receive the Austrian Netherlands however as they gave less money and military support they accepted Austria gaining Silesia and more without asking for the Austrian Netherlands. Also the Wittelsbachs are an easier Neighbour for France than the Austrians so they too can win in a Bavarian-Belgian exchange.

If Austria regained Silesia would it stay out of fighting the French Emperor?
