Australian Submarines - challenge

I don't think subs had a lot of scope for wartime additions like surface warships had, they were stuck with what they had built into them.

A GUPPY type programme was undertaken on RN submarines, but not until after the war. During the war there wasn't a lot of scope to add and remove stuff from in-service subs.

For sure however if the question is asked post ww2?

GUPPY and the Fleet Snorkel Program were implemented on World War II era USN submarines between the 1940s and 1960s. Something similar could probably have been done on British submarines.

The British did do something similar to their A-class subs, as well as some of those T-class boats which were retained post-war.

Just a thought I have had for this scenario.

What refits / additions would the RAN O class submarines have during WW 2?

In general, there weren't a whole lot of radical alterations to submarines during the war- probably not much more than adding radar, upgraded sonar gear, and possibly air conditioning, as well as trying to cram in a place for extra crew members that might be added. The US fleet boats with their reconfigured fairwaters & extra deck guns being installed, or the snorkels & radar-absorbent material added to U-boats were actually pretty radical as far as wartime refits went.

As far as I can tell, those few units of the O class & the similar classes (P, R) which survived their service in the Mediterranean didn't have many major alterations during the war.

As far as specific refits/additions might be performed on any submarines the alt-RAN might have (those O-class & anything else that might get passed on) assuming they survive long enough, they'd probably be the same general upgrades that RN subs got as the war progressed, though I haven't seen anything specific as to what exactly those were.

To be fair the British did make bloody good submarines, I think they were the fastest at crash diving of any navy. I particularly like the S class.
