What if Paul Keating and Labor won the election of 1996? First of all, what PODs could allow that to happen? (Keep Downer as Liberal leader?) How would the major developments of the Howard ministry play out under Keating's third term? Port Arthur, the waterfront dispute, native title, the GST, Australia's War on Terror, etc. The last one assumes that he wins again in 1998 or 1999; say the momentum of the constitutional debate instigated by Keating stokes internal divisions within between monarchists and republicans in the Liberal Party & Coalition causing Labor to once again triumph against the opposition, which leads to the biggest question, would Australia today be a republic? And if so how else would Australia be a different place esp. with respect to Keating's whole "reorientation to the Asia-Pacific" worldview?
