Aussies of AH.com, unite!

I'd like to have your help for a few plausibility checks about a completely different colonization of Australia.
First of all, I'm fleshing out this scenario by Thande, all credit goes to him.

So, are the following plausible:
  • The site of OTL Perth never becomes important, but instead, Albany [ITTL: Nouvelle Nantes] grows to be Western [TTL: French] Australia's largest city, with over 1 million inhabitants.
  • There's still a settlement near OTL's Adelaide, on Lefevre Peninsula (TTL: Port Larcier), a medium-sized regional centre which benefited mainly from being isolated from the rest of French Australia by hundreds of kilometres of desert (somewhat analogous to OTL's Cairns).
  • Port Phillip Bay is surrounded by large conurbation just as IOTL, Willemshaven, capital of New Holland.
  • There's no Sydney ; New Holland's largest Pacific city is on Jervis Bay.
  • There is still a large city in Moreton Bay, but not on the same spot as OTL's Brisbane.
I await your comments eagerly.
If all goes well, there'll be a map about this someday;)

A French Australia? Good god...

Kidding. This should be interesting. While I know little about the history of my homenation, I am very interested to see where you take this. I think all your proposed cities are plausible.

While I'm not a Aussie, just a Pom who lived there for three years I'm pretty sure Jervis Bay can't be site for major metropolitan area, while it's an good harbour it's not at good as Port Jackson (Sydney) and with the Morton National Park behind it it doesn't have the agricultural hinterland of any of the other NSW cities. If you want an alternative Pacific major city that's not Sydney I would suggest Wollongong/Illawarra area or maybe Newcastle.
Another idea would be to have Albury-Wodonga as a major inland city.

How about Brisbane? Would they qualify as a Pacific port in Australia?

It is a Pacific city but the OP said it wasn't the biggest city though it very easily could be, in fact after Sydney it is the best location for a major city on the Pacific Coast.

I have a list somewhere of the names Laperousse gave to some of the features during his trip. The only 2 I have at hand are Port Champigny (Port Lincoln, SA) and Île Decrès (Kangaroo Island, SA).

Regarding Sydney, its choice wasn't arbitrary, Port Jackson was the best place for ships to drop anchor in the area.

A far Better spot for a major port city is broken Bay, Brisbane Waters and the Hawskbury River due to its almost mountainistic hills (fresh water and protection from invasion) and the River has some very fertile farm land and the river will be extremely (do not underestimate the importance of Rivers) important transportation artery.
