I'm just curious as to how you do the Kennedy's so well... is it just hours and hours of research?
I'm also impressed that you can write about a progressive party while being a conservative - my parents have Fox News on through the day so that's the only flavour of conservative that I'm familiar with - and that flavour of conservative would certainly not be as kind to progressive politics as you are - or acknowledge the achievements in society in human rights and minority rights because of progressive parties that you acknowledge.

Fox isn't the beginning or end of conservatism. And you can't get an understanding of it from a cable news channel.

Tell me about it; my parents are guilty of the same thing :( .

I can also do conservative-wanks as well, in fact I will be doing a couple shortly. If you read closely you'll see that I'm not pushing progressive politics but the DLC centrist wing of the Democratic Party in those TLs. I don't write liberal-wanks. As you can probably tell, I'm very conservative but credit must be given where it is due IMO. Just because I write about implementation of UHC or any other entitlement program doesn't mean I agree with it- quite the contrary. :p

As for the Kennedys: not research, but because I'm genuinely interested in mastering the personalities, quirks, family dynamics, etc, not just the politics. It took me literally a couple of years to get to this point...

Yes we all dig RogueBeaver's Kennedy skills!

Though Meko you do know you can send these thoughts as a private message to RB himself don't you? Future reference.

Yeah but a pm wouldn't have generated this dialogue.

Btw, it's not just the Kennedys, I've observed rb is an encyclopedia of political and electoral info.

The problem is, the US political spectrum is quite right of the average country. Consider President Obama. In the states he is considered quite progressive. Up in Canada, he be considered a red tory/ blue grit. (Also note how Blue in Canada represents Right wing while it represents democrats in the States). That said, Harper is frankly equal to the more conservative members of the Democrats.

Ming: I would also be a conservative Republican in the States. The PM would as well, but this isn't the country where he has the ideological maneuvering room to do it. If an ASB granted him (and our party) political immunity from adopting a US-style healthcare system, he'd do it instantly.

Actually, red was the Democrats color and blue the Republicans' for years. It was switched about 20-25 years ago by the news networks for reasons only they can explain.

I was thinking this transition came during the Clinton years.

Regardless, RogueBeaver is to be commended for his rationality and talent in the timelines and related media he produces. From one forum conservative to another, bravo!

Heck, from a forum liberal, bravo. I may (and do:)) often disagree strongly with RB's politics, but he's rational and writes good TLs.

The Democrats = blue and Republicans = red only happened because of the 2000 elections.

The major networks always showed each party's wins in the Presidential election with a color. The blank slate map would be white. As each state declared for a specific candidate, it would switch to that party's color. The color used was always red or blue, but for every network and for every election it would be different. So CBS might show the Dems in red, and NBC use blue instead. The next election might have CBS using blue for Dems.

In the 2000 election, something unusual happened in that each network used the exact same colors for each party. So all of them showed Democrats as blue, and Republicans as red. Their maps seared into the public's consciousness because of the dramatic election results that polarized the nation. It was at this time that the media began using the colors as a shorthand for each party.

I think that RB gets respect from everyone in the political spectrum because, although his TLs may have political occurrences that people may disagree with, they are thoroughly researched and supported.

I certainly don't agree on many of the political issues, but I sure as hell respect his sanity.

That sort of respect also extends to members who end up discussing topics in those TLs as well. Honestly, there is a good amount of members who are extremely respective of political views and truly stick to the facts. It is surprising when you look at political discussions elsewhere in the internet/the world.
