Attila converts to Christianity

What if Attila suddenly begins to embrace Christianity or see it as an useful tool to cement his rule in Europe and have an actual legitimation. and converts to it ? There had been various threads about him becoming Emperor of th WRE . Could we see a Hunnic Church or does he become a Catholic who promises to protect it against Arian heretics ? He could be building a myth , that Jesus appeared in his dreams and promised him victory.

So devout, in fact, that he returns from the dead to succeed Franz Josef at the hour of the Empire's greatest need...

wrong forum, surely?

Seriously, it's his own people who are going to be the problem with this; he'll be swimming upstream against the public legend he's already made, and abandoning a ready made platform for a more authentically Hunnish rival to attack him from.

He'd need to see some signs that his people were willing to go along with him first, and he would need to feel attracted to the grandeur of Rome- which was in very poor repair at that date.

Besides which I was under the impression that most of the vandals and so forth who had preceded him had distinctly Arian tendencies, that being the strand of Christian and adjacent thought that appealed most to them, and the Huns not being so very different?

Attila was a very superstitious person, if he did convert to christianity, he would still hold alot of old pagan beliefs. I think he'd convert to Arianism though. Alot of Arian provinces were already in his empire

Arianism is considered a Christian sect if heretical,so if Attila became Arian he would consider himself Christian. Also, does Nestorian Christianity exist in the time of Attila? Because that was a popular branch of Christianity among the Mongols at the time of Genghis and Attila'd might be attracted to that. I have the feeling that he'd convert to the sect of Christianity that was popular amongst the Huns and allies.

It was around during the time of Attila but it was in the Middle East. The Mongols converted to it due to the expulsion of Nestorian Christians from China. Nestorians like to spread Christianity all over Asia

A Hunnic Confederation of peoples of Arian Christian religion would be interesting. If it survives Attila´s death, it could give Arianism a stronger stance against Roman Catholicism ? Maybe the Franks convert to Arianism aswell than. Maybe Attilas Empire adapts a own written language based on the Latin alphabet ? Perhaps there could be Arian Germanic bishops (like Wulffila with the Goths) and other clerics who are invited to Attila´s Empire to give it a structural reform.

I've always suspected that, had Attila's Empire actually managed to stick together following his death, that the Huns would have become Germanized overtime. Attila's court already had a good deal of Gothic influence within it. Should he, and his successors, convert to Arianism, I think that that would have actually sped up the process.

This would make a great timeline, a Germanized Arian Christian Hunnic Empire consisting of many peoples , ruled by the heirs of Attila (the Hunnic dynastic rules need a makeover). It could lead to an entire alternate foundation of European identidy. Then the Huns would have actually a legacy in Western Europe.
