Inspired by thenewfoundlander1993's ATL movie thread. Only difference here is, entries don't have to be part of the same ATL. :D

Here's one:

Union & Liberty (1984)-James Buchanan dies in a railway accident in 1854, and John C. Fremont wins the 1856 election(here's to you, Ares96! :)). The Civil War starts when Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia, and the Carolinas secede from the Union in April 1861, and lasts until September, 1865, when Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis surrender to Union forces in Austin, TX. Sadly, though, Fremont, being seen as a 'traitor' to his fellow Southrons, is assassinated by Alexander Stephens in July 1867, and collapses in the arms of his Vice-President, Abraham Lincoln.
Lincoln tries to keep the nation together during his five years in office, but pays a heavy price. Sympathetic Democrat U.S. Grant wins in 1872, and institutes the "40 Acres and a Mule" program, helping African-Americans to settle out west. Unfortunately, the program comes with significant backlash, and it doesn't help when William Seward wins the 1876 election and expands the program. And when Seward declares the Ku Klux Klan to be un-American after the vicious murder of a former slave in Georgia, the South erupts in rage, and in response, Seward sends Federal troops to occupy several of the region's biggest cities.......
