ATL - Football (Soccer) History Alternate Universe

Author’s Note: Even if I have great passion for football I actually have no background on football history prior to the 2002 World Cup. So, I’ll make up the players’ names, unless I actually know the real players like Pele, Zidane, or Cruyff. Or should I go and search on real players?

I also will be using a Match Generator to get the results, so anything can happen.

Before I begin, I would like some feedback if this idea is okay and if this it the right place to post this. If so I will commence from 1870 to the present day. Hopefully this will work out.

Thanks,

Fubolista97

I would try and base the timeline off a POD (Point of Difference). My first timeline which was Alt World Football had a POD where there was an earlier World Cup than in OTL. But of course that is just one situation.

Thanks HawkAussie, I'll give it a try.

Without further ado, here is the first part.

1870-71 - The Creation of National Teams in the British Isles and the First International Friendlies

On December of 1870, The Football Association (England) (FA) sent a letter to the Scottish Football Association (SFA), Football Association of Wales (FAW) and the Northern Irish Football Association (NIFA) requesting the creation of a British Football Association (BFA) and National Teams.

The summary of the letter was:
  • The FA, SFA, FAW and NIFA will be under the rules and regulations of the BFA.
  • The BFA will assure fairness between its members.
  • The BFA will hold a competition annually between the National Teams in June after the end of the season.
  • Each National Team will select the best 18 players from that nation, two of which are goalkeepers.
  • If the Associations agree to these terms, the first British Nations Cup (BNC) will be held the following year.

The SFA was the first to consider and replied stating that the BNC should be postponed to June of 1872 as they wished to watch their leagues’ players for potential call ups. Nevertheless, they would be happy to present a team for an International Friendly in London. To this the FA agreed. The NIFA and FAW followed suit and held a friendly in Cardiff in July.

The First International Friendly was held on June 10, 1871 between England and Scotland in London. This game ended as a shocker for England as it ended as a 0-2 defeat.

John McDowell, the Scottish Captain scored the opener on the 23 minute as he shot in Philip Hodge’s bad pass past Thomas Davis, the English keeper, who made five saves that night. But he could not stop Scottish defender Duncan Campbell, who was destined to head in a Scottish corner and make it 2-0.

On July 8 of that year, Northern Ireland played against Wales played in Cardiff. A 1-0 win to the hosts (Wales).

Nothing exciting happened in this game except Gilbert Evans early left footer goal and Harry Jones goal-line saves at the first and last minutes to deny Northern Ireland a draw.

Coming up... 1872 - The First British Nations Cup

Well that's all for now.

1872 - The First British Nations Cup

Prior to the BNC of 1872, the BFA held two International Friendlies Scotland vs Wales held in Edinburgh and Northern Ireland vs England in Belfast. Both played on December 24, 1871, called the British Football Association Christmas Special.

The Scottish received their first loss from Wales thanks to Gabriel Hughes’ long shot on the 58th minute and Hywel Roberts the star man of Wales with nine saves that night.

Meanwhile in Belfast, the Irish defeated the English, a 2-1 victory. The first half was a thriller all three goals being scored there as well as Homer Powell’s foul on Ian McKarthy which the referee cautioned both players with yellow cards after a few pushing and shoving between the two. Jim O'Keeffe opened the scoring with a well timed header on the 18th minute. Ten minutes later Patrick O’Leary doubled the Irish lead after dribbling passed three defenders. James Clattenburg slotted in England’s first international goal on the 45th minute with a headed pass by Edmund Harris.

On April 28, 1872, England publicly announced their National Team for the 1872 Nations Cup. The English were not so happy with this as Peter Wolfe the Head Coach decided to stick with the old team. Wales sent theirs on May 1st making one forward change. Scotland and Northern Ireland made two midfield changes each.

The BFA decided to hold the first BNC in two venues in London from June 1 to July 7. Wales were of course the favorites having won their first two international games. Scotland and Northern Ireland both eyed the championship as they had both defeated England but were cautious of Wales, England as the hosts kept their hopes up although they lost their first two games. These were the fixtures:
R1 England vs Wales - June 1 Scotland vs Northern Ireland - June 2

On June 1, 1872 the opening ceremony and first took place, Queen Victoria herself attended wishing well to all her faithful subjects and to play well.

The first game was England facing Wales, the Welsh held a strong hand during the whole game, on the half hour mark Arthur Iwan scored after a one-two with Hubert Driscol. Six minutes later, Jeffery Walton added to the tally with a curler from the right side of the box. ending with a 2-0 win to Wales.

The next day June 2, it was game 2 Scotland vs Northern Ireland.

Strangely enough, it was Northern Ireland who dominated, scoring three goals in the first half, courtesy of Brendan O'Sullivan, Evan McLoughlin, and Jamie Smith. Scotland did score however, on the 85th minute Duncan Campbell sent in a goal.

The Table of the Tournament by the end of Round 1:

Northern Ireland 3 Pts
Wales 3 Pts
Scotland 0 Pts
England 0 Pts

R2 Northern Ireland vs England - June 8 Wales vs Scotland - June 9

The following week June 8, it was the Top vs the Bottom of the Table, Northern Ireland vs England.

The English got excited as Philip Hodge scored a header from Victor Roe’s corner just before the hour mark. The English were on the verge of victory for the first time, Thomas Davis their keeper had made nine saves that night. But, Evan McLoughlin once again scored for his country on the 94th minute a shot that Davis should have stopped but, did not put a strong enough hand on it and the ball rolled in. McLoughlin saved his country from its first loss of the tournament, and saved his team a point waiting to see if they would be keeping first if Scotland would beat Wales. As for England, all their hopes for a first win were dashed and unlucky Davis who should have been hero of the match, was called “butterfingers” by the English Press despite all his efforts during the game.

On June 9, Wales once again triumphed over Scotland, it was Jeffery Walton’s strike that hit the Scots down to the bottom of the table. The Scottish were not happy with the result, as they saw Duncan Campbell’s goal before half time but the linesman incorrectly called for offside.

The Table of the Tournament by the end of Round 2:

Wales 6 Pts
Northern Ireland 4 Pts
England 1 Pts
Scotland 0 Pts

R3 Wales vs Northern Ireland - June 15 England vs Scotland - June 16

Wales once again won against Northern Ireland, Gabriel Hughes and Arthur Iwan both scored by the 10 minute mark. And that did it for the game, another clean sheet for Wales. The next day, Adam Wallace scored for Scotland. The young 19 year old was a full back, years later he would take number 9 a central forward. England lost again 1-0.

The Table of the Tournament by the end of Round 3:

Wales 9 Pts
Northern Ireland 4 Pts
Scotland 3 Pts
England 1 Pts

R4 Northern Ireland vs Wales - June 22 Scotland vs England - June 23

Round 4 would be the rematch of Round 3, it was important for Northern Ireland to win this game for any chances of winning the title, so they made a change of keepers from veteran Alan Murphy (31) to young Gary Fitzpatrick (20). This was a strange change but, it paid off as Fitzpatrick not only saved six shots, he also scored the only goal from half field to deal Wales their first loss. At first Giles Dover the Irish Coach at first thought it was a foolish idea for Fitzpatrick to run out of the box but ended content. The Welsh complained Fitzpatrick tackled Gabriel Hughes but the ref said play on. This angered Hywel Roberts the Welsh keeper who had harsh words for Fitzpatrick which would suspend him for the next game. Hughes said he was tackled but it was a good challenge, he ended saying “No harm done.”.

The other game England vs Scotland ended 3-2 for Scotland. This game exciting as it was, was overshadowed by the Fitzpatrick Goal. The important point of this game was that England was out of the title race, while Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland were still contenders.

The Table of the Tournament by the end of Round 4:

Wales 9 Pts
Northern Ireland 7 Pts
Scotland 6 Pts
England 1 Pts

R5 England vs Northern Ireland - June 28 Scotland vs Wales - June 29

The England vs Northern Ireland game ended 0-0 draw. Nothing special exactly happened in this game.

Scotland however won against Wales, and it was Adam Wallace who scored again, in this game he started in the midfield. Douglas Greene the Scottish Head coach was pleased with his recent performances.

The Table of the Tournament by the end of Round 5:

Wales 9 Pts
Scotland 9 Pts
Northern Ireland 8 Pts
England 2 Pts

R6 Northern Ireland vs Scotland - July 6 Wales vs England - July 7

Scotland and Northern Ireland hoped to take the win but sadly for both, Jamie Smith of Northern Ireland and John McDowell of Scotland were the only ones to score one each. This meant the only hope for Scotland was that if England beats Wales they will top the table, but this was unlikely.

Scotland’s fears became a reality as Wales defeated England 2-1 and won the first British Nations Cup.

The Table of the Tournament by the end of Round 6:

Wales 12 Pts 1st Title
Scotland 10 Pts
Northern Ireland 9 Pts
England 2 Pts

Aftermath

On July 10, 1872 The English Head Coach Peter Wolfe, was sacked by the FA president and promoted Kevin Alexander the former Assistant Coach, to the higher position.

On July 16, after the end of the tournament, the FA requested that for the next BNC matches some may be held on weekdays to shorten the length of the tournament, this however would not be taken into consideration until later years but by the BFA.

I see only one problem. There should be more goals as the dominant tactic during the early days of football was 2-3-5.

Otherwise, it's an interesting thread.

My Idea is that I make up the players and use a match generator.

From what you actually produced it would be better to state that the idea is to have a timeline where someone gets chosen instead of someone else.

Since you didn't mention this anywhere in the title or the first post it makes it seem like you were just going to choose teams and randomly rename the players... This is alternate history after all so you should have said that the difference is... well whatever. Why is John McDowell the captain rather than whoever, what changed the world that made it different?

Also I would check out UK at the World Cup thread if you're interested in this stuff. And it'd be good if you compared to OTL either at the bottom or in text to see how it diverges, ie, say the goals of the game in reality

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_v_Scotland_representative_football_matches_(1870–72)

(Got to say it always confuses me when it's called international games since it's between areas of the same country (UK)...)

I just don't get what happened in this timeline.

On December of 1870, The Football Association (England) (FA) sent a letter to the Scottish Football Association (SFA), Football Association of Wales (FAW) and the Northern Irish Football Association (NIFA) requesting the creation of a British Football Association (BFA) and National Teams.

Why is there a Northern Ireland team in 1870? Northern Ireland in our reality doesn't exist as a team until 1922 so what is different in this universe?

None of these existed, the FAW doesn't exist until 1876, as NIFA doesn't exist in our reality, NI is done via IFA, SFA doesn't exist until 1873.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Football_Associations_by_date_of_foundation#Europe_.28UEFA.29

So if you're going to make them all exist earlier, why not explain why?

You might as well spoiler the games and just post the results unless there's a reason to point out something.

Just a point of interest, Northern Ireland and the Republicc of Ireland didn't exist until 1922. It was Ireland (IFA) who played the internationals until the FAI was formed. Ireland became Northern Ireland (IFA) and a new team represented the Football Association of Ireland or the Republic of Ireland which quite incorrectly go by the name Ireland.

Not sure if this is directed at the OP or me, but I assume at me because isn't that what I just said. Unless you're just repeating what I said.

Also since the TL starts in 1870 probably should be pre-1900 forums too:

General discussion about alternate history scenarios where the divergence from real history happens from 1900 AD onward. Post "what if" questions and talk about the results. NOT debates about present-day politics.

The divergence here happens earlier.
