1st, August, 1903, Regina, Assiniboia
I write this on the second week of my freedom from the post of Governor-Generalship of Assiniboia, and I have decided that drinking is not going to bring back the joy in my life. I have decided that after this year’s loss, I will abandon politics altogether; as I should, I am 59 and it is time to hand the reigns down to the next generation.
I think I will take up writing, tell my story to be remembered by posterity, to tell the story as it happened. I will write the memoirs of the father of the Métis people, to tell whoever reads this document my story, my ups and downs, the successes and the failures.
I am Louis Riel, and this is the story of the Métis peoples.
