Arthur of Tudor has a Son

Arthur Tudor was married to Catherine of Aragon in November of 1501. Let’s say they consummated their marriage and Catherine gave birth to a boy. What would become of the boy when Henry VII dies in 1509? There would be a Regent or Council as he would only be seven, but who would it be? Also what would names be? Henry, Edmund, Owen? I’d assume he’d die around 1553 or 1558, maybe later. And who would he marry?

Named after his grandfather, Prince Herny of Wales, born August 1502.

Potential Brides
- Isabella of Austria ( 18 July 1501 – 19 January 1526), daughter of King Philip I and Queen Joanna of Castile and the sister of Emperor Charles V, through her mother, she is a niece of Catherine of Aragon.
- Mary of Austria (15 September 1505 – 18 October 1558) daughter of Queen Joanna and King Philip I of Castile and the sister of Emperor Charles V, through her mother, she is a niece of Catherine of Aragon.
- Renée of France (25 October 1510– 12 June 1574) could be arranged by Henry of York, Louis XII of France and Mary Tudor, Queen consort of France, after her birth.
- Lady Frances Brandon (16 July 1517 – 20 November 1559) daughter of Prince Henry aunt, Princess Mary Tudor, and Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk
- Dorothea of Denmark (1 August 1504 – 11 April 1547), only daughter of King Frederick I of Denmark and Anna of Brandenburg.
- Isabella of Portugal, (24 October 1503 – 1 May 1539) eldest daughter of Manuel I, King of Portugal and Maria of Aragon making her a niece of Catherine of Aragon
- Beatrice of Portugal, (31 December 1504 - 8 January 1538) second but last surviving daughter of Manuel I, King of Portugal and Maria of Aragon making her a niece of Catherine of Aragon.
- Isabel d'Albret of Navarre (1512–1555) the daughter of John III of Navarre (died 1516) and Catherine I of Navarre
- Jane Seymour (c. 1508 – 24 October 1537) daughter of Sir John Seymour and Margery Wentworth. Through her maternal grandfather, she was a descendant of King Edward III's son Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence.
- Princess Anne de Laval of Taranto (23 September 1505 – 1554) pretender to the Kingdom of Naples, she was the daughter of Guy XVI de Laval, count of Laval, and of Charlotte of Aragon, Princess of Taranto, making her a distant cousin of Catherine of Aragon, through Ferdinand I of Aragon, whose eldest son, Alfonso V of Aragon's had an illegitimate son.
- Christine of Saxony (25 December 1505 – 15 April 1549) daughter of George the Bearded, Duke of Saxony and Barbara Jagiellon
- Magdalena of Saxony (7 March 1507 – 25 January 1534) daughter of George the Bearded, Duke of Saxony and Barbara Jagiellon
- Sybille of Cleves (17 January 1512 – 21 February 1554), daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves and Maria, Duchess of Julich-Berg

- Amalia of Cleves (17 October 1517 – 1 March 1586), daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves and Maria, Duchess of Julich-Berg

The regency council, starting on 1509 with King Henry VIII aged 7, lasting until 1518~1520 when he’s 16~18 years old and will be made up of:
- Prince Henry, Duke of York, the king’s uncle.
- Princess Catherine, Dowager of Wales, the king’s mother.
- Cardinal Christopher Bainbridge, Archbishop of York (he died in 1514)
- Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Archbishop of York (carried on for Bainbridge in 1515)
- Rev. William Warham, Archbishop of Canterbury (who as diplomat and lord Chancellor for Henry VII, had helped to arrange the marriage between Henry's son, Arthur, Prince of Wales, and Catherine of Aragon) [1]

[1] Henry VIII would name his second son, after Rev. Warham. This would be the first son born legitimately to a king, to be named William, since William (17 August 1153 – April 1156) was the first son of Henry II, King of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Could be Arthur,after his father.

Now who would OTL Henry VIII marry? His chances of getting a prestigious marriage overseas is diminished by the fact that he is not heir apparent or the King. They already have a papal dispensation for him to marry his sister in law,but with an heir secured, there’s no need for Henry VII to marry his son to Catherine of Aragon to secure her dowry. So who would he marry his son to?I presume it would have been a wealthy local heiress.

It’s not really custom for English king’s to name their first born after themselves. It was usually the name of their grandfather. I can imagine that Arthur becomes the TTL version of OTL Albert, with the name becoming a sacred name.

For Henry, an English noble woman is the best option.

But in this case,it will probably be Henry VII doing the naming. Will he actually name the boy after himself?

Well if Henry VII is naming him it could be:
- Henry (in honour of himself and second son)
- Edward (after Elizabeth’s father Edward IV of England)
- Edmund (after Henry’ Father Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond)
- David (After Welsh patron, St David)
I still think Arthur’s probably what he would name his grandson. He was enamoured with the legend of King Arthur and probably missed his oldest son, unless of course if he thought that the name was jinxed. The few heirs of the English throne that were called Arthur never succeeded to the throne.

The boy will be called Arthur or Henry... His choice of brides: Eleanor or Isabella of Austria as leading candidates (one will marry the new prince of Wales, the other the future John III of Portugal) with Beatrice of Portugal as third choice (or Isabella of Portugal if Charles of Austria marry elsewhere)

Working backward from the Tudors:
Henry VIII named both his sons by Katherine of Aragon and his bastard by Bessie Blount Henry.
Edward IV's eldest son, Edward V; eldest daughter after her mother
Henry IV and V naming their eldest sons Henrys V and VI
Edward II and III and the Black Prince naming their eldest sons Edward

Seems pretty custom to me.

In the case of these kings, they share the same name as their father.
