Sam Houston is Dead!

Sam Houston, the Hero of the Battle of San Jacinto, has been declared dead by his doctors in the United States were he was seeking treatment of an ankle injury from the aforementioned battle. The famous soldier and politician was considered a shoo-in for the office of president in the upcoming election. The doctor over-looking his care has said, "When he arrived he looked to be making a recovery, but then about a month ago, it turned septic. I waited, then urged amputation, but he refused, preferring to wait. Unfortunately, he did not relent until the infection had spread, and on June 26th, he died." Many, including Mirabeau Lamar, another candidate for president, hailed Houston as a visionary, a man of peace, the father of our country and a Texan George Washington. Mr. Lamar is now considered the favored candidate for the presidency. His body is being returned to his native Tennessee for burial.

Mirabeau Lamar has been officially proclaimed the first elected president of Texas. Lamar whose election was made possible by the death of Sam Houston in June, has pledged to "make Texas great." In an address yesterday he outlined his plane for the next 2 years, including encouraging immigration from the United States, securing Texan territory from Mexico, and seeking diplomatic recognition from the great powers of Europe. He has also proposed making the capital in the town of Houston, founded in August, after the great war hero.

This is a map of North America with Texas in green. Dark green is the area they effectively controlled, light is the land they claimed.

When President Lamar's term ends in two months, he can feel proud about what he has accomplished for Texas. First and foremost, he has established the Republic of Texas as one of the upstanding nations of the world, securing diplomatic recognition from the United States, the United Kingdom, France and other Great Powers. Running a close second, he has endeavored to keep us safe from the Mexican threat by creating a national army, albeit one whose main function is policing. He has set up a tax system, prevent the difficulties that prevailed under president Burnet; Burnet even had problems feeding his family.
Less immediate, but still vital if our nation is to stand against the Mexicans, he has encouraged immigration from the United States, the population of our great country is now 60,000. Also, he has prevented the Indians on Texan land from attacking our settlements, and otherwise kept the peace.
Having a president who has done so much being forced out of office for at least three years is a shame, but we can comfort in the fact that he has personally vetted his successor, and is staying on in government in the capacity of Senator.

Today, Edward Burleson has ascended to the highest office in the land. Elected with an overwhelming majority on the recommendation of his predecessor, Mirabeau Lamar, he can expect 3 years of greatness. Previously serving as a Senator, he is well versed in the issues facing Texas.
During his inaugural speech, he pledged to “continue the great work of president Lamar, keep Mexico off our backs, secure the support of the United States, and control all of our territory.” He also explicitly rejected calls for amalgamation with the United States saying, “We are Texans, what do those men in Washington understand of our problems.” He however allowed that “we might not need fear Mexico if we became Americans.” But he went on “But to quote a great American 'Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. ' We may need the support of the United States, but it will never do to become lost in their gullet.”
He also hinted that he had some ideas to gain the United States' support, saying “Today we fear one power on this continent, and have healthy relations with the other. We have much in common with the United States, and I see many points of common ground vis-a-vis our southern neighbor.”
Mirabeau Lamar, after the speech said, “It was inspiring. We must address the problems with Mexico, and I see Edward doing just that. I will do my best to advise him on the issue, should he ask for it.”
