By Jupiter! There's the runaway effect, but this is crazy. Almost like a 1963 type deal. (LBJ gets shot by accident by the Secret Service and you have a few more step down, or too old to become President.)

So now we have...Donald Regan as the President. Gods help the Union.

REAGAN SLAIN, BUSH MISSING, D.C. IN LOCKDOWN!
- most major news headlines, March 30, 1981

*
The tragic events that took place afternoon one March day in 1981 is often marked as the beginning of what many historians refer to as the ‘downward spiral’. The death of a President would have been enough to cripple an already fraught nation, but now something of a putsch had been committed within one afternoon, with a Vice President missing, the Speaker recovered from the bottom of a river and the Pro Tempore’s heart giving out. Things had gone wrong very quickly.

Today the United States lost four of the highest-ranking members of the Presidential cabinet, including Pro Tempore Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, Speaker of the House Senator Tip O’Neill of Massachusetts, and, most saddening of all, President Ronald Reagan, were killed. At the current time, Washington awaits the return of Vice President George Bush, who was visiting his native state of Texas, to return to Washington to be sworn in as the 41st President of the United States.
- news anchor John Chancellor for NBC, 6:11pm

Vice President Bush, along with the crew and pilots of Air Force Two, would never return to D.C., which remained in lockdown well until the early morning. To this day, nobody can say for certain what happened to the plane, as no official wreckage has been found. The most acknowledged theory is that the plane crashed somewhere in the mountains of the neighboring state of Virginia, with small groups of eccentric theorists having launched a handful of ill-fated expeditions up Mount Weather to look for a tattered wing with a Presidential seal. On the subject of eccentric theorists, due to the bizarre and tragic coincidences, many have posited that Haig not only knew about the events in advance, but helped orchestrate them, using the CIA to plant an unstable loony as cover while they shot and killed Reagan, and bribed the pilots to crash the plane (or land it in Cuba, depending on who you listen to), amongst over things. There's also those who claim it was the mafia that did it, or the Illuminati, or the soviets (as Haig had raved about), or aliens. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

Secretary Haig, after being allowed to give an incredibly short press conference, was confined to the Situation room, guarded diligently by a rotating mob of secret service officers. Cars were stopped and searched at the city limit, and a strict curfew enacted. Rioting and looting, interestingly enough, as kept to a surprising few cases, seeing as how many in the nation were far to busy mourning the loss of their Commander in Chief.

My fellow Americans. Earlier today, we have suffered the loss of not only our President, but also Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill and Senate Pro Tempore Strom Thurmond. As of now, I am in control here, in the White House, awaiting the return of the Vice President.

Alexander Haig, Secretary of State and ranking member in the chain of succession, would be inaugurated as President of the United States the next day.

And then things got worse.
