We've had several stabs in the past at exploring the effects of Ross Perot becoming President, but never John Anderson, the Republican Congressman from Illinois who represented the more liberal, "Rockefeller" wing of the GOP who, after losing the nomination to Ronald Reagan in 1980, ran as an independent, naming former Democrat Governor of Wisconsin and Ambassador to Mexico Patrick Lucey as his running mate. He polled well early on, comparable to Governor Reagan and incumbent President Jimmy Carter, and even participated with Reagan at an early debate (Carter wasn't present). In the end, though, Anderson's numbers deflated and he only won 7% of the vote on Election Day. So. Let's apply some handwavium for a moment and say Anderson keeps up his momentum and, against all odds, wins the White House in 1980. How does John Anderson, the last redoubt of the liberal Republicans, govern the United States?
