Anti-Christian American Nationalism

How can we make it so American nationalism has a strong anti-Christian component to it?

At least some of the luminaries of the Revolution were Deists--Thomas Paine, who wrote "The Crisis," also wrote The Age of Reason, which is EXTREMELY anti-Christian (and anti-Judaic too). He seemed to view it an insult to the Creator that He be identified with the "tribal" and "violent" deity of the Bible.

Not to mention I was lurking on FreeRepublic a few minutes ago and there was a guy complaining about the Reformed theologian John MacArthur, who takes a very hard-line view of Romans 13 (governments come from God). The guy said that MacArthur said the founding the US was sinful and then said that MacArthur would make a good Jew-killing Lutheran in Nazi Germany.

So how can we make it so Christianity is seen as something that's anti-American and anti-liberty? I'm thinking use by Britain of ministers to keep the people in line using verses about obedience to authority, but that might not be enough to turn the public against Christianity.

Well, you could go with anti-semitism. Nazis nearly became anti-christians because they wanted to eradicate traces of jewish culture, and well, Christianity is arguably a trace of that.

You could change the religious attitudes of one of the founding fathers. That way they may have a posterchild for it in the future.

It's kind of hard because most strongly anti-Christian philosophy stems from negative experiences with Christianity, which the United States largely didn't have.

Maybe the inter-colony conflicts of the pre-revolutionary days could be upscaled, or London tries to impose an established church? Or there is a clearer pattern of churches supporting the Loyalists? Otherwise, anti-Christian sentiment is simply going to be a kind of patriotism that coexists, however uneasily, with Christian-inspired.

Anti-Semitism by itself might be rather difficult given that there weren't all that many Jews in the 13 Colonies and many of them supported the American independence movement (for example, a Jewish merchant named Benjamin Solomon donated his entire fortune to the Colonial cause).

However, I could imagine it emerging later as the logical conclusion of anti-Christianity--after all, many of the Biblical verses that those who dislike Christianity take issue with are from the Old Testament, the Jewish holy book.
