Here is the latest for a time travel film coming soon in 2020 called Antebellum:

The scary premise is that something is sending women back in time to the antebellum South. The scares come when the victims are African-American women. The problem being that no matter what they say or do, they will not be listened to or believed. To make matters worse, trying to explain their situation will only likely get a person whipped, beaten, raped, or killed. If anything, definitely not a situation wherein most time-travel stories would have the persons magically invent something to prove they are from the future.

This is the kind of time travel/alternate universe story I actually tend to gravitate towards. The savageness of past eras tends to get glossed over in a lot of contemporary time travel stories.

That having been said. . . this seems to me to be like the genre of 'black suffering revenge porn'. I get the point of stories like this is to make the viewer feel uncomfortable. But aside from the time travel element, I feel I've seen this sort of story before. Think 12 Years A Slave or Amistad. I get theres a market for it, and I get it's important we don't forget about this era in our history. But it seems that it's just going to be retreading old ground in those movies. Only likely without the catharsis of Django or Amistad with the slavers being killed/the Africans getting their freedom.

Django was also a slick Tarantino-type action film of the blaxploitation type. I don't think this is revenge porn though. It's from the producers of Get Out and Us and so this would be the sort of black-centric horror film, instead of suffering recent porn. The latter wasn't really even a movie focused on race. This trailer depicts a bunch of cliches though, from the creepy little girl crawling spider-like to the creepy little girl shushing at the camera.

This reminds me of Octavia Butler's Kindred.

Antebellum will release on April 24, 2020. The film is written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz. Antebellum marks their directorial debut; the pair have a history of socially-driven work, including a political music video for the hip-hop artist Jay-Z, as well as a PSA condemning police brutality. Antebellum is being produced by Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick (Get Out). The production company for the film is QC Entertainment; it is being distributed by Lionsgate. Filming for Antebellum began May 2019 and the film is currently in post-production.

Story details for Antebellum are very much under wraps, likely on purpose. What has been released is a log line, "Successful author Veronica Henley finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it's too late." Janelle Monáe plays Veronica, though nothing else about characters in the film has been released. The trailer reveals two timelines; pre Civil War slavery, as a Southern plantation is shown, and modern times, as Monáe's character is shown having dinner with friends, and a 911 voice-over is present throughout. The film's tagline is: "if it chooses you, nothing can save you."

This movie might be a bit too real for most people even though it’s probably old hat for people who are familiar with this kind of genre.

I couldn’t finish reading the first book of the island in the sea of time trilogy because of the intensity of the rape scenes. so this would be hell for me.

Yes, but it should also flag for audiences why many people of color aren't comfortable with time travel stories. Too often, the characters depicted are WASP characters who face no major challenges due to race, gender or religion.

This was my concern for Doctor Who before they finally went with a female doctor. Would her travelling into Earth's past reflect how women were treated throughout most of history?
And when you take into the fact they were looking at non-white actors, both male and female, for the character would they just ignore all adversity people of color went through in the Americas and Europe?
Unfortunately, I have not seen any of the newest Who so I do not know how it has been depicted, but I assume most of the racism and sexism has been down played.

I doubt I'd watch this film. I was uncomfortable with movies and TV with rape scenes before, but since my daughter was born I can't watch them at all.
They allows bring up the worry that has been nagging me in the back of the head, that some freak is going to attack her.

It seems there’s another Time travel alternate history/slavery story being released alongside Antebellum.

it’s called CRACKA.

If anything, it seems more of an alternate timeline rather than a time travel story. If anything, it should be an interesting piece. I certainly hope it isn't like White Man's Burden (1995):

Apparently the film has been moved to August 21 (8/21), and it does play on the idea that most people who time travel are white males who can easily impress the "ignorant masses" with their knowledge:

That has me wondering if the writers/producers did some of their research here?

I'm with Sovereign12. I don't want to watch the rapes and beatings.

I'm sure that this will be a very important movie with things to say.

I just don't want to watch it at all.

And:

Pretty much my feeling too.
Fair enough, if anything, every genre is being reexamined , from comedy to science fiction, but the thing to remember is that these are angles and stories that haven't been told before. Traditionally the stories and films have been told from the perspective of straight WASP male characters / protagonists.

Second, too often the stories have been too often watered-down commentaries on different periods in history. Consider that A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain ( not the many productions of said novel) which was the grandaddy of the ISOT stories and time travel pieces, was a pretty bleak commentary on slavery and the the British monarchy. In the same tradition, the current film, is meant to show that the legacy of slavery still remains, and that the romance of the antebellum South was actually quite horrifying to anyone who was a person of color....

Even in San Francisco, California, I remember white Southerners proclaiming their "proud history and heritage", and how they needed to proclaim the "Stars & Bars"...
