Antarctica - it's own state>

Is it possible that, for whatever reason, Antarctica was colonized and a single(or several) independant Antarctic state(s) was/were created? Or are the conditions there just too harsh to allow humans to live there permanantly and in large numbers?

Yes, can't live off the land. It is a rough place.

Not without significant support from the outside and a lot of importing of materials and food. I mean, you could probably find some reason for some group to "start a new life" there. But keeping it maintained is a completely different story. That would require a lot of foreign investment, and a significant reason for said foreign investment.

The problem is that Antarctica's easily-obtainable resources can probably be obtained elsewhere with less trouble. Whales, coal, and petroleum can be found plentifully in warmer, less ice-ridden areas of the world. Now, in modern times, there have been a lot more resources found in the interior...but exploiting them has been banned until 2048.

You could PROBABLY make it a dominion of a country if it had long enough there, didn't mind spending loads of its money to support it, and viewed things in the long term

If you invest in a port you can live off the SEA and import the rest; you could investigate the mineral wealth and oil etc and begin work that eventually would give it a self-sustaining economy...
