Another Princess of Asturias

It is the summer of 1500.

Maria, Queen of Portugal, opens correspondence from her mother, Isabella, Queen of Castile. It bears terrible news. Over the last three years, she has lost her brother and sister. Today, she learns that her sister, Joanna, was lost at sea during a journey from Flanders to Castile, or has fallen from a horse, or something. And that her nephew, the Infante Miguel, was too sickly to survive.

She is now heiress to her mother, and her eldest son heir to Castile and Portugal.

Thoughts?

If your POD is during the summer of 1500 then Maria of Aragon wouldn't become the heir of Isabella I. By then Joanna already gave birth to Eleanor (1498) and Charles (February 1500) and so the baby boy would be made Prince of Asturias. Also, Maria only married Manuel of Portugal in October, so she wouldn't still be Queen of Portugal.

A best POD would be to make Joanna die in childbirth when Charles was born, with the baby dying too. Then later (November maybe?) you can have the young Eleanor dying from some disease, and so Maria becomes the next princess of Asturias.

Under this scenario Philip would have to find other bride. Catherine of Aragon was already officially married to Arthur Tudor, so other Spanish match wouldn't happen.
