I was wondering wether it was plausible that another nation would be able to develop, or survive, without being annexed by the English, or taken in later into the UK. I believe the main reason for it not to have survived in the north, was because the state wasn't a power to rival Britains was because it was so inhospitible, not many people could live off the land, as much of it was hilly, rocky landscape, so a large population would be hard to get. I believe the hilly landscape in northern Britain also aided them to defend themselves, but it didn't do any favours in peace-time. (also, i'm not TOO up-to-date on Anglo-Scottish relations after James V, so please enlighten me in this area.

)
There could also be the possibility of another nation being developed in the eastern regions, similar to the Danemark, although if this had happened, neither of them would really have been considered nations, they would be considered Duchys of a kind, and would probably unify when the threat of France came about.
Also, if such a thing
did continue to exist, would it be exploited during the medieval era, and if it survived through that would they be conquered when the "Colonial Spirit" took over the world?
