Another king for Iraq

Apparently there were two other candidates aside from Faisal to become the newly appointed monarch of Iraq: the Naquib of Baghdad and Sayid Talib. The Naquib was too old to rule and only would had accepted the consent of the people as reason enough to rule but he deferred to Sayid Talib, a man who had some popularity amongst the Iraqis.

Any chance it could happen?

Well Faisal didn't have a base in Iraq, so he could remain independent on the British. Sayid Talib was actually viewed as enough of a threat to be deported. If Faisal gets his Greater Syria, or is at least put in Jordan or maybe Hejaz (or Jordan-Hejaz), I don't see why Talib wouldn't get the nod.

I would figure it would smart to use Talib. From what (little) I've read of him, he was popular enough in Iraq (particularly in Basra) and got the nod from the Naquib, the prominent political and religious figure in Baghdad.

Perhaps. Thanks.

The biggest problem is Talib is actually popular among the Iraqis, and the British wanted a puppet kingdom.
