Another Iran during the Cold war

What country could be similar to Iran during the 1980s which both superpowers are hostile to and wish to contain.

Mmmm. It should be on a flash point, third world, .. I would vote for a more "extreem" South Africa. It intervened in Rhodesia, USED a tactical Nuke, is suspected of employing Bio-weapons etc. Nobody wants to have anything to do with them, but they are the only non russian source of a few strategical minerals.

In Ethiopia, you could see the communist Derg being overthrown and have Orthodox Christian extremists seize power in the 80s as the Derg becomes increasingly bogged down in pacifying resistance movement after resistance movement throughout Ethiopia.

Wouldn't the United States be likely to support them as they're not communists and they don't threaten any US interests

I can see the US coming to provide material support and advisors as Ethiopia becomes a religious state of Orthodox Christians which might even restore the monarchy. Not to mention, Ethiopia is placed quite strategically on the Horn of Africa and with Eritrea, able to affect other African and/or Middle Eastern states along the Red Sea.

Soekarno’s Indonesia without the events of 1965. Anti US and pro Beijing in its foreign policy.
