Angola without Cuba

Cuba poured a lot into the Angolan Civil War, sending more than 430,000 volunteers. Their equivalent of Vietnam, really. Castro was by all accounts quite obsessed with the war in Africa and how it was going.

Suppose Castro could be convinced not to dump men, money, and material into this conflict and instead stayed at home. What would happen to Anolga, Cuba, and proxy wars everywhere?

And yay 1000th post.

Could Castro real ignore Angola. It was one of the most important Soviet sphere countries and Cuba was very reliant on the money and supplies from the Soviet Union and block.

How much of the involvement was really ideological and not payment for all the oil, food and supplies including military hardware he was receiving.

Cuba was paid lots of petro $$$ by Angola also for its contribution, I do not think it could of survived without trouble at home if it had not involved itself.

If you think of the other Communist country fighting a civil war namely Mozambique I did not see Cuba's involvement there to the extent it was in Angola, why because Angola is rich in oil, diamonds and gold so it could afford to pay Castro.

No, he couldn't. That, in three words, is my final answer, Meredith. :D

More importantly, ask yourself why Castro, of all the Communist leaders, and Cuba, one of the poorest Communist nations, sent so many men so far with so little prospects of reward.

Perhaps it suited Castro to have 430,000 unemployed men out of the country?
