Angola and Mozambique mid-late 1970s- direct US military involvement

During the Angolan and Mozambican Wars of Independence, could the US have become directly militarily involved during 1974-75 in assisting the Portuguese security forces in their COIN ops against the Communist rebels ? Could the US possibly after 1975 and independence have deployed both covert and overt military aid to assist the anti-Communist resistance groups like UNITA and RENAMO against the MPLA and FRELIMO and the Cuban forces who'd been sent to their aid ? In addition to the CIA and a purported secret army of African-American Vietnam vets (which never actually eventuated, and has been discussed on the old board), could the US have feasibly deployed Green Berets and elements of XVIII Airborne Corps to former Portuguese Africa to directly fight the Commies, tog with USAF strike and transport assets and a supporting USN carrier battlegroup ? What about giving more COIN support to white Rhodesia and South Africa ? Or would such an intervention have been rendered impossible due to Washington's cont'd post-Vietnam flunk and desire to avoid further direct military entanglements ?
