Anglophone Mestizos

Or Metis, or whatever term you want.

What are the ways one could get Anglophone North America to be like Latin America, with a major component of its people of mixed European and Amerindian ancestry.

Eh, maybe it could help if you didn't have so many families migrating to North America. Perhaps the English have an interest in getting furs from the Indians and decide to send small groups of men, mostly single, to make business with the local tribes?

I am aware of a certain pattern with colonization, that of a lack of women from the Old Country causes intermarriage with the locals. For example, in India, British and Indian marriages mostly ceased when the sea voyage became safer and more white women were allowed to come over.

Question is, how do we delay the settling of families in North America?

Yes. That's true, Finn.

I'm not too sure. Perhaps the English decide to concentrate on getting furs from the Native Americans? Instead of desiring to build settler colonies, small trading posts are built to make business with the locals.

Part of the reason is that North America was settled later and its closer. The early Spanish and Portuguese settlers in Mexico and Brazil would have preferred Caucasian women but the cost and difficulty of getting enough over was too difficult with 1500's ships and trade winds. North America in contrast by the time the Mayflower arrived naval technology was much advanced and the distances were shorter enabling that form of colonialism.

I think your biggest problem is that there just weren't enough nativese relative to the white population coming over. There was something like two million inhabitants north of the Rio Grande at the time of Columbian contact, relative to about 50 million south. Thus, even if you do get the breeding of the two peoples, you just end up with white people who have one great, great grandfather being Cherokee or whatever, rather than mestizos as such.

Your best chance is to get the British take the Yucatan, or another place with a dense native American population, and then use the "wildness" of the place to put off white women coming over.

I think this is right. If you fix the population problem, you'll also fix the problem of the English coming over later when technology allowed them to bring English women. A much larger population means a much richer area that draws contact sooner.

The problem then would be making the area Anglophone instead of Spanish.
