Anglo-Soviet Great Game

What if the UK and the Soviet Union between the time frame of 1921-1946, a new Great Game over Iran began and the Soviets' aim was to make Iran communist? Could the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran have been butterflied into a proxy war between the Communists and pro-Pahlavi forces? I intended to make this POD lessen the desire for Anglo-Soviet cooperation.

The USSR had far too many problems to do this at that time. Perhaps if Trotsky took over after Lenin he would focus on exporting revolution, but Stalin was right that they needed to focus on Socialism in one country first before thinking about promoting revolution abroad. IOTL the Soviets signed a deal with the British just to head this off and that was under Lenin:

Maybe if the Soviets got in on Germany's side in WW2 it could happen.

There was an Anglo-Soviet "Great Game" throughout the region in the 1920s. It's detailed in Peter Hopkirk's wonderfully written book "Setting the East Ablaze", the third book in his Great Game trilogy.

Damn but I love Hopkirk's writing. I didn't even know that the Great Game was a trilogy, though. Looks like I've got some reading to do!
