anglo German hostility and "the battle of Dorking"

In the 1870s a book was published suggesting that BRITAIN could have been invaded by the new German Empire.

How much was this in many ways absurd account a factor in the eventual alignments in the first decade of the 20th century?

It was apart of a wave of Invasion literature, which was a result of the rise of Germany and what some saw as the impending war.

I'm conflicted, on the one hand, I was born in Dorking, and I don't think any fiction - apart from Jane Austen's Emma - is set there, on the other hand, I'm half-German.
