Anglo-French Union of the 1950s ? Consequences

I assume this union would be at the expense of the Brit-US 'special relationship'.

If so we are looking at a 3rd superpower, with an independent H bomb, extensive global influence and considerable economic clout.

Perhaps the Malayan Emergency and Indochinese wars in the '50s could be fought jointly, with the Brits intervening to save Dien Bien Phu.

I can easily see consequences. As is true with all nations of the world, nationalism is at different levels at different times. I believe the British and French Nationalists, no matter how prominent they were in OTL at the time, would (understandably) riot against such a union.

Just think about the all powerful lobby of the veterans of the 100 years war in France :D

POD would obviously be the Suez crisis, or at least the year 1956.

We discussed anglo-french cooperation "to death" at the whatif modelers board, mainly on the subject of rockets, aircrafts, ships...

Concorde would only be a reduce part of the anglo-french coopeatives programs!

- medium-sized supersonic bomber
- aircrafts carriers, heavy cruisers etc.
- heavy fighters
- Concorde
- helicopters
- rockets (already done with Europa I agree. Btw last Diamant rocket launched in 1975 used some Black Arrow hardware)

There would be a LOT of thing to share... and yes this would have create a third superpower, at least in astronautics!

Ok I'll try to give you some numbers.

This does not include imperail empires of both countries.

France was around 40 million people in the 50's, and I think Great Britain was rather close from that. In fact Italian, French and British population numbers had been close from many years, slowly rising from 40 to 60 million people.

Imediate consequence would a population of around 80 million people - sounds familiar ? its the population of Germany

Now Great Britain is (to my humble knowledge) 250 000 square kilometers when France is much bigger at 550 000 square kilometers.

So the resulting country would be 800 000 square kilometers, slightly bigger than... Texas (yes, Texas is bigger than each European country :D)

So United Kingdom of Franglish would be have 80 million people living onto 800 000 suqare kilometers.

A comparison with Germany give a similar population... living on (again, in my humble knowldge) 350 000 square kilometers.

France and Spain are the biggest territories in Europe (after Russia of course!) both are 500 000+ square kilometers.
