Pacte de Famigla

Chapter I the defeat of the Grand alliance

The Year is 1687 for years tensions have been growing between the French crown and the Dutch republic. Louis XIV was the hegemon of Europe. With the pacte de famigla Spain and France were close allies. James Stuart was the king of England a man hated by many. However he had the support of Louis. The cause of the war was simple; the Netherlands knew that at an alarming rate James policies were intertwining England with France, which had the potential of France vassalizing Britain!!! Something WIlliam of Orange could not allow for it would signal the end of the Dutch. William had to stop this and so at the urging of many William launched an invasion of England. However the invasion failed miserably, *seizing the opportunity the King of France Louis declares war on the Dutch and off the coast of Antwerp, the French navy under the brilliant admiral Toulon deals a crushing blow to the Dutch. In the ensuing naval battle the Dutch navy is decimated and William and his ship is sunk. With the destruction of the Dutch navy Louis launched all available forces on a push across the Rhine. Soon the Dutch fought bravely but resistance was futile. However the Dutch had one ally. The HRE was growing wary at French advance and was determined to halt it. Soon the HRE declared war on France. Leopold had many reasons for doing this. The HRE was at war with the Turks but he saw his, as a way to make sure that should Charles die without an heir, the Hapsburgs would retake Spain. Soon the HRE troops invaded France. Now the French had a brilliant general, his name was Vaubon. Vaubon soon crushed the HRE off Lorraine. By 1690 Lorraine was overrun by the French. The French also had another very powerful ally, James II, with the aid of the duke of Luxemburg an army of some 30k French troops landed at Liverpool. With this army at hand James soon destroyed the protestant opposition. By 1691 James had secured England. With England secured James declared war on the HRE.

Leopold faced a desperate situation. The Ottomans had smashed his forces in Bosnia and were making rapid gains in Hungary. While the French were destroying the Dutch allies. Now The Kingdom of England also sided with France, the HRE was in a very precarious position. Leopold tried desperately to hold it together but he failed. Meanwhile the combined Anglo-French fleet destroyed the Spanish navy and a combined force of some 40k men landed at Gallica, while another 100k Frenchman invaded Spanish Basque territories. Meanwhile in Italy French forces crushed Austrian forces. By 1705 the HRE sued for peace. In the treaty of Westphalia the HRE was forced to cede all of Lorraine and Alsace to France. It gave up its Italian possessions to France. While Spain was forced to cede Barcelona and Basque territories to France and at Charles death Philip would become the Spanish king. Shortly thereafter Charles died and Philip the Dauphan became King of Spain. By 1708 the British were under French control. James had essentially relied completely on the French and soon Britain was reduced to a vassal status. Meanwhile the Dutch gave up the Rhine to France and withdrew all claims to Britain. By 1709 a new great power was created Louis XIV was no the King of the French who vassalized England, and soon was guaranteed for bourbon restoration In Spain. The Kingdom of England, Spain, and France were intertwined at last. The HRE was licking its wound and Leopold was furious as he saw the new power. In 1711 the Bourbons secured hegemony over Britain and Spain. The war was a complete French success. However it depleted French treasury. Soon what followed was a dark time France was bankrupt…………
