Hey Guys,

A poll will be up soon, but I need to ask for your opinions on an Anglo-Dutch Union in my TL and whether it's likely/too cliche-ish?

The very basic back-story is that the Levellers took over after the deaths of Cromwell and Ireton in the Putney Debates. Charles II and Prince James died in a Scottish Civil War. Scotland is still a Kingdom while England is a Republic, the war in ireland is ongoing.

William II, Prince of Orange has taken over Amsterdam and thus the United Provinces are under his near-dictatorship, and he hasn't died from smallpox. William II's son William (OTL William III) is now the pretender to England and Scotland, while the State-Generals have now sent an emissary to England to try and get English help.

Now then, should I have an Anglo-Dutch Union given the OTL feelings at the time as well as taking my TLs situation into account, or should I leave it and simple have the English support the Republicans in the United Provinces?

Thanks for anyone who votes or gives any comments.

Could you please give more detail on how your TL works, how William II did what he did, and what exactly OTL William III is doing in England, and could you expain how he got there?

What were OTL's feelings about the matter?
The Dutch didn't want to, but the Dutch republicans were in control at that point, so that might be different in thenordicbrit's timeline.

Anyway, I would suggest thinking about what kind of timeline you want to write. If you want to focus on a leveller England/Britain, don't do it. It will just distract from it. If you want to focus on an early republican age, do it. The combined country will be a lot stronger and will more easy influence other countries to go republican.

I've said English support but no union for the reasons I stated in the TL thread. I think neither side would be willing to give up on their recently gained position [formal independence for the Dutch, the establishment of the republic in England]. Also there are religious and trading conflicts and I doubt if England wants to get too heavily involved in continental wars and the Dutch to allow English access to a number of their markets in the east.
