Andronicus II, Byzantine Emperor

Andronicus II, son of Michael VIII, inherited a weakened restored Byzantine empire. WI: He had proven to be a more capable ruler, and was at least able to keep the Turks at bay in Asia Minor and to prevent the rise of the Italian trading republics, who virtually destroyed the Byzantine economy. Would this have made much difference in the long run?

Given his blithering incompetence in OTL, yup.

At the very least he could have kept hold of the Asian side of the Bosphorus.
