Andronicus I Comnenus.

WI: He managed to retain the throne, reforming the government, without taking such extreme measures. Would the Latin attack of 1204 then have been avoided?

Do you think it is possible that we'd see the Trebizond branch of the Komnenus ruling Byzantium if Andronikos suceeds?

Actually it is quite difficult for this man to retain his throne... Although he was capable as a military commander and administrator he was brutal and short tempered... a man governed by his passions rather than logic... plus he was hated through out the Empire due to his many double crossings done by him to his cousin the late Emperor Manuel I... And of course who can forget his treatment on young Alexius II who was the rightful heir...For most of his reign he was viewed as an usurper... A change of heart and attitude is required in order to achieve minimal support for his authority...

Success breeds loyalty, a show of ‘’god’s favor’’ for his rule would go a long way. Perhaps a smashing victory over the Turks and the recapture of parts of Byzantium’s old Anatolian holdings would do the trick.

IIRC he was pretty old when he took the throne, 65 or so, so was bound to have a pretty short reign. I think an interesting scenario is if he took power instead of Alexius, possibly because of his anti-western leanings. He would attack the westerners and re-orient politics back to the east, be available to fight off the invasions that occured during Alexius IIs reign and when he went crazy later on could be deposed by the now 15 year old Alexius II. Alexius II may be able to steer a middle path between east and west.
