Europe has been invaded, overrunned, conquered, and settled by various groups of people throughout its history. I was just wondering, which groups that acted as 'dominant' ancestors for present-day Europeans...? For instance:
1.English: Britons, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, or Normans?
2.Spanish/Portuguese: Celtiberians, Romans, Visigoths, or Moors?
3.French: Celts/Gauls, Romans, or Franks?
4.Italians: Latins, Romans, Ostrogoths, or Lombards?
5.Germans: I'm not sure...
6.Russians: Slavs or Norse/Vikings?
And how about other invaders such as Huns, Avars, Arabs, Magyars, Turks, etc?
And some 'minor' tribes, like Burgundians, Suevi, Alans, Gepids, Alamanni, Marcomanni, Jutes, etc? ('minor' means they didn't evolved into some sort of nationality)
And how about ancient settler-colonists like Greeks and Phoenicians?
Do they leave a noticeable 'genetic marks' in today Europeans?
