After the overthrowing of Justinian II by Phillippicus Bardanes, the empire went into a further time of chaos. Beset on all sides, Phillippicus was only concerned with imposing Monothelism on his subjects.

The Opsikian army dethroned Phillippicus and nominated Artemios, an imperial secretary, emperor. Taking the name Anastasios, he exectuted the very officers who offered him the throne. The death of the Caliph in 715 gave him an opportunity. He concentrated his navy in Rhodes, and dispatched an army under Leo the Isaurian to invade Syria.

Anastasios II was deposed by troops from the Opsikian theme. What happens if Anastasios keeps the throne?

If Anastasios keeps the Throne [Maybe using the Opsikian Troops as the core of the troops sent East] and forgets about stirring up trouble by Imposing Religious Unity.
Then He has a chance of retaking Eastern Anatolia, and the Levant.
While one of the follow on Emperors will probably lose it again, every push back against the oncoming Muslim Tide -- means the Muslims start farther back.

As for religious unity, Anastasios has nothing to do with it, except for that bringing him to the throne.

The coup against him was in response to him killing the officers that put him in power. The military controls the throne at that time.
