I've spent quite a bit of today reading about the Anarchy, and was wondering whether anybody has looked at what might happen if Theobald, Count of Blois and Chartres had pressed his own claim on the English throne when Henry I died, at the expense of his younger brother Stephen?
Strict primogeniture really doesn't seem to be too important back then, so Theobald didn't exactly break any norms by not going for it. Stephen also happened to be in the right place at the right time when Henry died, allowing him to make a move before anybody else (chiefly Matilda, but possibly the illegitimate Robert of Gloucester too) could put their own plans in motion. However, what happens if Stephen is ill, or otherwise unable to accompany Henry's body back to England. Has anybody ever written about the reign of King Theo the First?
I seem to remember one TL looking at William Clito, but can't remember anything about his cousin.
