Anarchy Unleashed: A Robot Wars Timeline

Right I am sick of trying to write hopelessly epic timelines where the fate of the world hangs in the balance. [And accidentally closing tabs where my post is.] So I am trying something simpler...

ANARCHY UNLEASHED: A ROBOT WARS TIMELINE

latest

All right slow down, what is this all about?

It is a timeline about Robot Wars, a game sh - no - reali - NO! - a show that featured robots destroying each other for forty-five minutes every Friday. It ran between 1998 and 2004. There were two US versions, as well as a German and Dutch version.

Okay...

Okay

Aren't you just copying the politbrits with these lengthy internal monologues?

Yes.

So... what great political and cultural impacts will your PoD have?

Errr... none. I guess Craig Charles might be a bit more famous...

So pretty niche, yeah?

Yes... Look, this is a timeline about robots fighting each other, how hard can it be to be interested in that?

Knowing you, a lot?

Oh shush.

After the early exit of 101 from the Fifth Wars, Team 101 set about building a new robot. The result was a highly engineered walkerbot by the name of Anarchy. Armed with an axe and a flipper, which Mike Franklin claimed had the force of Chaos 2’s flipper, Anarchy was comparatively light for a walkerbot at only 167kg but it was still heavy enough to make flipping it a difficult task for most conventional flippers. The technical challenge of building Anarchy was nearly too much even for the combined expertise of Mike Franklin and Steve Bickle, with the team only having a day to practise using the axe and flipper.

In proper terms, Tornado should not have been a seeded robt in Series 6, having fallen in the second round against Diotior. However, the inability of both Wheely Big Cheese and Pussycat to compete (the former because of lack of funds, the latter because of the death of one of the team members) meant that Tornado was seeded on the basis of its success in the Fourth Wars. Compared to Anarchy, Tornado was a comparatively simple robot, effectively being a box on wheels. For the Sixth Wars, the team had also constructed a number of interchangeable weapons which could be used against different robots.

Round 1: Tornado versus Terror-Bull versus Inshredable versus Edge Hog

The seeded robot completely dominated the first battle of Heat G. After getting a couple of axe blows in on Terror-Bull, Edge Hog was pushed around the arena by Tornado and slammed several times into the wall. Edge Hog was eventually able to escape and began attacking Terror-Bull again but was pushed (along with Inshredable) into the CPZ occupied by Matilda. Matilda caused extensive damage to Edge Hog and then threw Inshredable out of the arena with her fly-wheel, the first time a robot was thrown out of the arena with a vertical spinning disk. Edge Hog was counted out by the Refbot just seconds before Tornado pushed Terror-Bull into the pit.

Qualifers: Tornado and Terror-Bull

Round 1: Anarchy versus Revolution 2 versus Judge Shred 2.5 versus Thor

The second melee of the heat was a more equally matched affair. Judge Shred tried to lift Anarchy but could not do so. As Judge Shred and Anarchy clashed, Thor landed several heavy blows on Judge Shred while Revolution 2 attempted to stay out of the way. After initially being on the defensive, Anarchy gained the upper hand over Judge Shred with several well-timed axe blows and managed to flip Revolution 2 against the arena side-wall, where it became beached. Thor joined in the hammering of Judge Shred, which by the end of the battle was barely moving. The battle went to a judge's’ decision with Anarchy and Thor being voted through.
Qualifiers: Anarchy and Thor

Round 2: Anarchy versus Terror-Bull

Terror-Bull began the fight by charging headlong into Anarchy but the weight of the walker robot coupled with its lifting scoop prevented the bull robot from gaining any traction. Anarchy hammered Terror-Bull several times before it escaped and attempted to attack Anarchy from the side but it was not quick enough. Anarchy was eventually able to flip Terror-Bull onto its side, where it became stranded.

Winner: Anarchy

Round 2: Tornado versus Thor

Once again Tornado dominated its opponent, easily pushing them around the arena. Tornado’s only real difficulty in the entire match was when Growler attacked it illegally but Tornado quickly recovered. Thor sustained heavy damage and its pincers stop working. The judges put Tornado through into its second heat final.

Winner: Tornado

Round 3: Tornado versus Anarchy

Tornado had equipped its ramming spike for this battle. The fight began with Tornado launching a series of aggressive attacks against Anarchy, slamming repeatedly against its side and scoop. Anarchy, however, was able to remain upright and landed several punishing blows on its opponent. Anarchy also attempted to flip Tornado with its lifting scoop but after the rambot nearly got under the scoop and damaged the delicate insides, Team 101 opted to focus on hammering. Towards the end of the battle, Tornado lost power on one side as Anarchy hit its wheels. This allowed the walker-bot to shunt Tornado over the arena side wall and nearly flip it out of the arena, although Tornado survived and was able to escape long enough for a judge’s decision. The judges unanimously put Anarchy through to the semi-finals, a first for a walkerbot.

Heat Winner: Anarchy
