An unexpected casualty of the Great War?

"A persistent rumour, both in Amesbury and among former members of the Royal Flying Corps, insists that the military wanted to have Stonehenge torn down too, as an impediment to low-flying aircraft."--Christopher Chippindale, *Stonehenge Complete* (4th edition 2012), p. 175

Chippndale adds in a footnote (p. 307): "At least, l can find no record of any formal application. I guess it was talked about in the mess, and perhaps towards the end of a social evening began to seem a serious proposition. If it was ever formally proposed, it did not get very far."

To highlight the risk I have included this fine Edwardian example of photoshopping :p
