I've been reading David Mitchell's excellent book Cloud Atlas, and the fifth story, An Orison of Sonmi-451, had me thinking how the world could have plausibly become something along the lines described in the story.
For those of you who haven't read the book, An Orison is set some time in the 22nd century in what appears to be a Greater Korean Empire, "Nea So Copros", with Consumption Zones stretching from Uzbekistan to Aleutia, from Baikal to the Phillipines and Production Zones in Africa and Indonesia. It is run by corporations in a political-economic system known as corporatocracy. Corporations control the masses through enforcers, and ensure social stability through mandatory spending. Each consumer is given a quota.
